LOCATION: Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia
I had never seen the Great Barrier Reef before, either from sea level or from the air. So, when an opportunity arose to fly ‘doors-off’ in a chopper, I leapt at it.
We took off from Airlie Beach & first had to traverse some of the Whitsundays before arriving at the reef itself. What a sight it was. Endless ‘islands’ of coral, a myriad of water colours & formations which somehow resembled a map of the world.
Given that the reef is totally under water, I had not expected to see so much from the air. The patterns, shapes & colours extended in all directions & I quickly came to appreciate just why it is regarded as one of the world’s natural treasures.
